Chad of Mercia (died 2 March 672) was a prominent 7th century, Anglo-Saxon monk. He is known as having introduced Christianity to the Mercian kingdom.
One of four brothers, who were of Northumbrian nobility, he chose a monastic lifestyle. Educated at Lindisfarne, also known as ‘Holy Island’ which was one of the most important religious centres in the British Isles. Chad, founded a Monastery in Lichfield.
He is best known for his humility and walked everywhere. He would travel for miles doing missionary and pastoral work.
His feast day is celebrated on 2 March
At Saddleworth church, we have been known to celebrate St Chad and groups (stories to follow) have undertaken pilgrimages to various churches that have been dedicated to this saint.
