Reported in the Manchester Times, 12th February 1842 issue 698, was the unfortunate accident involving the daughter of Moses Platt of Mytholm. Sarah (or Sally as our register indicates a burial 4th February 1842) missed her way and fell into Huddersfield Canal.

Halifax Coroner Mr Dyson held an inquest at the Commercial Inn, Uppermill, stating that this was the ninth life lost within memory in that part of the canal, in consequence of the want of a fence and blame was put on the proprietors of the canal.
