James Bowers

Was buried here first, on 30/03/1882 at a cost of 12/-s, aged 61, he is recorded as having lived in the Workhouse. His wife, who lived at Birks, near Austerlands was buried 11/10/1898 at a cost of 6/-s. Later their son who is recorded as living in Waterhead was buried 21/04/1906 at a cost of 6/-).

Ben Dawsons wife, from Heywood Lane, Austerlands was buried 05/05/1908, 11/-s.

The grave is marked by a CWG headstone marking the burial of Private Fred Jackson (77825), the son of Joseph and Margaret Jackson of Austerlands. He died on 14/07/1918 at Norfolk War Hospital, aged 19.

He had previously served in the Labour Corps which was manned by personnel rated below the A1 standard suitable for front line service. Many were returned men who had previously been injured. The 24th Cheshire Regiment was a Home Service Battalion which was formed on 27 April 1918. Fred died on 14th July 1918 so didn’t serve long with them.
