Thomas Samuel Peters

Of Higher Kinders, Greenfield, Thomas and Elizabeth, buried their daughter Florence 22/06/1908 aged 12. He was later buried 02/05/1916 aged 62.

Private Peter Peters (306180), listed on the CWG, was buried 10/04/1918. He is recorded as having died of his wounds. Aged 41. In the 7th Battalion. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment.

Son of Thomas Samuel and Elizabeth Peters. Brother to Albert, Annie, Harriet, Mary, Ralph, Fred, Florence and Sophia. The family lived on Kinders, Greenfield.

Peter joined the Territorial Force for 4 years on 19th August 1915 and transferred to the Duke of Wellington Regiment before arriving in France on Christmas Day 1915. He was wounded in the head on 10th September 1916 after serving a total of 1 year 196 days. The Medical Board report of 11th May 1917 declared him physically unfit for service.

  • In action 10.9.16, France.
  • Result of GS Wound. Permanent. Total incapacity at present,
  • Will not require outpatient treatment on discharge.

He never fully recovered and died of his wounds in Oldham Infirmary on 5th April 1918. What horrors he endured in the last year of his life can only be imagined.

His Mother Elizabeth was buried 06/08/1925, aged 74, followed by Mary buried 19/02/1958
