Parish Centre Art Group

This group was established over 20 years ago by the well-known artist Sheila Dewsbury. Her influence and dedication have shaped the artistic journey of many members throughout the years. Initially based in Delph, the group found its first home in a vibrant environment conducive to creativity. After some time, the group moved to a canal warehouse at Wool Road in Dobcross. There, it thrived for five years. The group fostered both artistic talent and a strong sense of community among its members.

The group faced necessary changes as the years passed. They relocated to Kiln Green Church Hall in Diggle. Essential repair work to the canal prompted this move. This transition marked a new chapter in the group’s history. Sheila’s unwavering guidance ensured that the members continued to develop their skills. They also refined their artistic visions. Under her mentorship, group numbers steadily increased. This increase reflected the growing appeal of the vibrant community. It also highlighted the enriching experiences offered to both novice and seasoned artists alike.

The group faced challenges due to the Covid lockdown. They reformed at the Parish Centre in Uppermill. They adapted to new circumstances with resilience and determination. This return was not just a physical relocation. It was also a revival of the shared passion for art. Collaboration had always defined the group.

After many years of patient guidance and unwavering support, Sheila has retired, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration. We are fortunate to now have Phil Hughes, another much admired artist, at the helm. His fresh perspectives and experience promise to continue the group’s tradition of fostering creativity and artistic exploration.

The group meets every Tuesday morning. This provides a regular opportunity for members to come together and share ideas. They can refine their skills in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. This weekly gathering nurtures individual talent. It also strengthens the bonds of friendship and collaboration. These bonds have become the hallmark of this artistic community.

New Members are always welcome. Whether you’re looking to gain new skills, share your knowledge, or you want to simply make new friends. There’s a place for you here. Our doors are open, and we believe that every new perspective enriches our experience. Don’t hesitate to reach out and discover what we can achieve together!
