Although we have a famous James Platt the Musician, found in the Old Yard. We also can find a James Platt of Prospecton who was an author. He was the first Schoolmaster at Denshaw and for many years a Schoolmaster at Boarshurst. He taught George Shaw (Architect and Furniture Builder) as a boy.
He can be found in the lower yard (recently rediscovered).
An 1851 census indicates his occupation as Guardian of Poor and Insurance Agent. The census includes his son (Laurence), two daughters (Mary Jane and Ann) and Jane Ashworth his sister-in-law and Edward Ashworth (aged 6) whom James is named as his Guardian. His son Owen is living next door.

An 1841 Census

The late James Platt, of Prospecton, was both a poet, and essayist. he claimed the authorship of the epitaph on Bill o’ Jacks gravestone , but it is not inserted amongst his works published since his death. he wrote ‘Tom Sheridan’s Shooting Excursion;’ a religious drama, entitled ‘Joseph and his brethren;’ and several dialogues on various subjects.
There is much to discover about this local character and thank you to the Historical Society.

Fiona,
Is this the same James Platt with the table tomb to the North of the church? He was a very famous bellringer (of his time) and musician.
The table tomb shows a broken flute signifying the end of his flute playing career and a broken bell rope similarly showing than his bellringing career had ended. It also shows lead-ends of a bellringing method – forgotten which off the top of my head. I have quite a bit of information about him, although much of it in technical bell-ringing speak.

At first, I thought they were both the same but I have discovered that they are two different individuals. There is a post on the old yard plot. This one can be found in the lower yard. The grave needs cleaning.
