Saddleworth Church, has performed a major role in Saddleworth. The building is one of the oldest and most visually prominent structures in the community. Having been the setting for many generations for the rites of passage from baptism to burial. This building occupies a unique position for understanding the area, its past and present, as we look to the future. Even in an age of declining church attendance.
One of the aims of this project is to work closely with individuals and historical groups. We invite people to contribute as we collate the knowledge that is pertinent to the church, which over the years has been lost or freely taken. We now know that it enriches the experience of visitors, and adds value to its significance as having historical merit worthy of being protected for future generations.
Saddleworth St Chad Church known as the ‘Parish on the Moor’ is listed by Historic England as a Grade II* building ‘at risk’. This means that the building is of special interest and warranting every effort to preserve it.
