An unassuming and faded memorial headstone, quietly standing, captures the essence of Saddleworth Churchyards, serving as a reminder of the lives lived and the stories beneath. Churchyards are more than collections of gravestones; they are places where family stories quietly unfold across generations.

A recent burial of a husband and wife who were married at Saddleworth Church in the 1960s. After a lifetime together, they returned to rest not in a plot of their own, but together with the parents of the bride. Their story is one of love, family connection, and a journey that in many ways, came full circle.

The headstone is currently being refurbished and the original inscription will soon look like new. James Buckley Bamforth was born in Dobcross 1888 and he married Margaret McEnany in 1919. As Britain emerged from the shadow of the First World War, he died in 1939 at the age of only 51, only months before another world war began. He never lived to see his daughter married at Saddleworth Church in the 1960s. He was a local butcher following in the footsteps of his late father George Harry Bamforth. Margaret was a Servant, her father Bernard was a Farmer. Margaret died shortly after the wedding in 1964 aged 69. The couple lived on Carr Lane Greenfield.
